Before Vacuuming a Rug: Check Its Label and the Vacuum Manual

Compare the rug's care label with the exact vacuum and head. Do not test a combination when either instruction is unclear.

A vacuum head can fit a rug and still be unsuitable for it. Check the rug's care label and the manual for your exact vacuum model and head before cleaning.

Record the rug label and model

Write down the rug's name or product number, front and back, material if listed, and any instructions about brushes or suction. Record the vacuum model and head. Do not decide from appearance alone. If you cannot identify either item, ask its maker or seller.

Read both sets of instructions

Use the combination only when the rug's care instructions and the vacuum manual both allow it. One instruction does not cancel the other. A vacuum manual that mentions carpet use does not override a rug label that prohibits a rotating brush.

For example, the ÄRENDE rug information prohibits a rotating brush. The Makita CL108FD manual describes carpet use and suction settings, but that does not remove the rug's prohibition. Do not try a low-power setting when the head or rug instruction is unknown.

Choose: use, do not use, or ask first

What you confirmed Next step
Both makers allow this model, head and rug Follow both sets of instructions
Either instruction prohibits the combination Do not use that head on the rug
Model, head, label or material is unclear Do not test it; ask the maker or seller

Do not make a test pass on a hidden area when the instructions are unclear. A low setting does not prove that a prohibited brush is safe. Keep the label and model information together when you ask for advice.

This guide does not measure cleaning results or effects on rug fibres. For other floor and home conditions, see the home cleaning checklist.
