When a laptop and papers fill a desk, there may be too little room to work. A folding side table can add a surface in some layouts, but its top dimensions alone do not tell you whether it will fit. Check where its legs open, how it affects your chair and walkway, and where you will store it.
This guide uses a side table placed beside a desk to explain how to compare its dimensions in use and when folded. It does not guarantee that a particular product will fit your desk or safely hold heavy items.
Identify the space you need first
Choose one specific problem. The space needed differs depending on whether you want to open a notebook in front of your keyboard or temporarily set down a drink or papers. If rearranging the items on your current desk is enough, you may not need to buy a side table.
If you plan to place one beside the desk, measure each area separately:
| Area | What to measure |
|---|---|
| Beside the desk | Width and depth from the desk edge to a wall, furniture, or walkway |
| Tabletop and frame | Width, depth, and height when in use, including the legs or frame |
| Opening space | Room needed to move the legs or top. If the manual gives no dimensions, ask the seller or check the actual item |
| Chair and legroom | The space for pulling out the chair, your knees and feet, desk legs, and drawers |
| Storage | Width, height, and thickness when folded, plus the space where it will stand or lie down |
“The tabletop fits” and “I can use it without bumping into it” are different checks. Mark the footprint on the floor with tape or make a paper outline, then test the movement of pulling out your chair. A paper outline does not reproduce the legs or weight, so it cannot verify stability.
One example using official dimensions
To show how to read product dimensions, I checked Nitori’s official page for the YO01 folding side table. It lists the table as 46 cm wide, 42 cm deep, and 64 cm high when in use. When folded, it is 46 cm wide, 12 cm deep, and 72 cm high. It is still 12 cm thick when folded, and its height is 72 cm. These are not tabletop-only measurements.
This example shows why the word “folding” alone is not enough to plan storage. Measure whether a space 46 cm wide and 72 cm high is available for storing it upright, and whether you have 12 cm of depth. The official page does not specify the maximum area needed while opening the legs or the clearance from a desk. Check the instruction manual or ask the seller before buying if those details matter.
Compare the heights before placing it beside your desk
Measure the desk and side table heights from the floor. Even if the official in-use height is 64 cm, that does not mean it will be comfortable with your desk and chair. Decide what you will place on it, such as a keyboard, papers, or a drink, and check the reach and line of sight.
If the two surfaces sit side by side, a difference in tabletop height creates a step when moving items between them. Mark the footprints on the floor and check whether that step, the walkway, or the chair causes a problem. Product dimensions alone do not show how comfortable or stable the setup will be for you.
Checks to make before buying
- Decide what you want to place on the table and measure those items.
- Mark its in-use footprint beside the desk with paper or tape, including the chair and walkway areas.
- Compare the desk and side table heights, and consider how you will move items between them.
- Compare the folded width, height, and thickness with the inside dimensions of your storage space. Check that doors and drawers can still close.
- Check the official manual for the exact model’s opening method, locks, load limit, and assembly. Ask the seller about any condition that is not documented.
Tabletops, legs, opening methods, and stated storage dimensions vary by product. Even matching dimensions do not establish stability under actual loads or on an uneven floor. If you cannot find information about stability, do not choose it for heavy equipment or fragile items; wait until you can verify the conditions.
If you want to start by organizing what goes on your desk, see the small-desk pre-purchase checklist. Rearranging your current desk may provide enough room without adding a side table.
