Headphones can take up space when they are left on a desk. Before buying a stand, compare a freestanding model with one that clamps to the desk edge.

This guide explains how to compare desk measurements with manufacturer specifications. It is not a hands-on test with a particular desk or pair of headphones. Check your own setup before buying.

Measure the top, edge, and space underneath

Measure the width and depth of the spot where you want to keep the headphones. Include the space between the desk and a wall or monitor. For a freestanding stand, check the stand's width and depth, then leave room around it for the headphones.

For a clamp-on stand, measure the desk top's thickness. Check for an apron, drawer, brace, or cable tray below the edge. Also check whether the desk edge is rounded or has a step. Compare these details with the maker's installation requirements.

Leave space below the clamp for the headphones. Check whether they could hit your chair, knees, drawers, or cables. You can mark the planned position with paper as a rough space check. Paper does not show whether a real clamp will hold securely.

Compare specifications with the space you have

Look at the product's outside dimensions and its supported desk thickness separately. A maximum thickness does not mean the clamp will fit every desk shape or clear objects underneath it. If the maker does not list the required clamp opening or clearance, ask the seller or maker.

Sanwa Supply's PDA-STN25BK measures 43 mm wide, 67 mm deep, and 164 mm high, and weighs 136 g. The maker lists support for desk tops up to 48 mm thick and headphone bands up to 70 mm wide. Its load limit is about 1.2 kg. These are product specifications; they do not confirm a fit with your desk or headphones.

The clamp can hold the headphones above the desk as a stand or below it as a hook. This can free space on the desk, but the desk edge and the area underneath must allow installation. If the measurements and installation conditions suit your desk, check the Sanwa Supply PDA-STN25BK product listing.

Choose between a freestanding and clamp-on stand

Type Check When it may not work
Freestanding on the desk Width, depth, height, and room around the headphones Skip it or change the layout if it takes too much work space
Clamped to the desk edge Desk thickness, edge shape, apron or drawer below, headphone band width Do not choose it if the clamp hits an obstruction or its requirements are unclear
Use an existing spot Whether a safe place is already available on the desk edge or a shelf If the current arrangement works, you may not need another stand

A freestanding stand is less dependent on the desk edge, but uses space on top. A clamp-on stand can free that space, but depends on the desk top and the clearance underneath. The better choice depends on your measurements and how you use the desk.

When to wait before buying

  • You have not measured the desk thickness or checked for an apron, drawer, or cable tray.
  • Your headphone band is wider than the supported size, or the measurement is unclear.
  • You cannot tell whether the clamp will clear the edge and the space below it.
  • The headphones could hit your chair, knees, or cables when hung.
  • You cannot confirm the installation requirements with the maker or seller.
  • Your current storage spot already works.

The PDA-STN25BK specification gives a maximum desk thickness, but does not confirm how it fits every edge shape or apron. If the fit is uncertain, do not force the clamp. Ask the maker or skip the purchase. Price, stock, shipping, and sales terms can change.
