Check Whether a Monitor Riser Fits a Small Desk

Measure desk space, monitor feet, screen height, and under-riser storage before buying a monitor riser.

A monitor riser changes the screen height and how you use your desk. Do not choose by the riser's width alone. Measure the monitor stand, keyboard, desk depth, and the items you want to store underneath it.

This guide explains what to check before buying and when to wait. It is not a hands-on review using a specific desk or monitor.

Measure the open space on your desk first

Put the monitor where you normally use it. Measure the desk width and depth available for a riser. Include the wall, desk edge, cable openings, and the space your keyboard uses. A riser may fit on the desk but leave too little room for your hands or mouse.

Next, check whether the monitor's feet fit on the riser top. Measure their width and depth and compare them with the top surface. If you turn the screen from side to side, leave room to move the feet as well.

Compare the riser height and items stored underneath

A monitor riser raises the screen. Check the current screen position and your eye level, then consider whether you can view the screen without tilting your neck back after adding the riser. A suitable height depends on your sitting position and screen, so the riser's height alone does not establish a health benefit.

If you want to store a keyboard or another item underneath, measure more than the item's height. Leave room for cables and your hand. Check whether the riser legs or braces will get in the way, and which direction you will use to slide the item in and out.

As one example for comparing dimensions, Sanwa Direct 100-MR167 (58.5 cm wide, 20 cm deep, and 8 cm high) is listed. The maker's document gives a total load capacity of 10 kg. These dimensions and load limit describe this model; they do not confirm that your monitor can be placed safely on it or that it fits your desk. Check the latest specifications for the riser and your equipment before buying. Price, stock, shipping, and sales terms may change.

When to wait before buying

Do not rush to order if any of these are unclear:

  • You do not know the width and depth of the monitor feet or the equipment's weight.
  • The desk's available width or depth is smaller than the riser.
  • There is not enough room left to use your keyboard and mouse.
  • You cannot tell whether the items you want to store will fit underneath or slide in and out.
  • You have not compared the riser's total load limit with the weight of the equipment.
  • You cannot check the screen position after adding the riser and decide whether it will work for you.

Stability can also depend on an uneven floor or desk, assembly, and how the load is placed. Do not treat a load-limit number alone as proof of safety; read the maker's instructions. If the dimensions do not fit, do not cut or alter the riser. Look for another size or skip the purchase.
