Check Desk Space Before Placing a Portable Monitor

Compare the monitor body, stand footprint, cable clearance, and space left for your hands before buying.

Do not choose a portable monitor for a small desk by comparing only its screen size or body dimensions. You also need room for the stand when it is open, the cable bends, and your keyboard and hands. A maker may publish the monitor's body dimensions without stating how much desk space its stand needs.

This guide shows how to compare your available desk space with a product's dimensions before buying. If the maker does not provide the stand's footprint, do not assume the monitor will fit. Ask the seller or maker first.

Decide which parts of the desk must stay clear

Measure the desk's width and depth. Then place your laptop, keyboard, mouse, and papers where you normally use them. Record the area you could use for a monitor separately by width and depth.

Keep space for your hands and the distance from which you view the screen. When measuring the space from the front edge of the desk to a possible screen position, do not count the entire desk depth as free space. Allow for your keyboard and the stand.

Check the monitor body and stand separately

Check the product page or manual for the model number, body width and height, weight, and ports. A screen's diagonal size does not tell you its width or height on the desk.

For example, Sanwa Supply lists the DP-06 body as 362 mm wide, 227.2 mm deep, and 13.4 mm high, with a weight of about 670 g. That depth describes the monitor body. It does not state how much desk depth the built-in stand needs when open or how much room is needed for stable placement. Tracing the body on paper does not check the stand's footprint.

If official information does not give the stand's open width and depth or the distance it needs from the desk edge, do not guess. Ask the maker or seller for the required width and depth with the stand open, the distance from the desk edge, and the supported placement. If you cannot get an answer, the monitor's fit on your desk is unconfirmed.

Include cables and connection requirements

Leave room on the side where the video and power cables connect, including space for their plugs to bend. Check that cables can reach the computer without being pressed hard against a wall or desk. If you cannot find the clearance needed with a connector plugged in, check the manual or ask the seller.

Check video output and power requirements for both the computer and the monitor. USB-C connectors can have the same shape without supporting video output or power delivery. If you want one USB-C cable to carry both video and power, confirm both capabilities in the specifications for your exact computer and monitor models. If the specifications do not confirm them, do not assume the connection will work; wait before buying.

Use a paper outline to compare the body size

If the monitor's body width and depth are available, cut paper to that size and place it on the desk. This compares only the body's outline. It does not check the stand's footprint, cable clearance, screen height, or how stable the monitor will be.

Check in this order:

  1. Place your laptop, input devices, and papers as you normally use them.
  2. Cut an outline for the monitor body and place it where you want the screen.
  3. Separately confirm the stand's width and depth when open, and its required distance from the desk edge.
  4. Check cable clearance and the space left for your hands.
  5. If any dimension or requirement is unknown, ask before buying.

Even if the paper outline fits, that does not prove the monitor can be set up on your desk. If the stand footprint or connection requirements are unknown, do not treat the monitor as a fit; wait before buying.

What to check if you are considering the DP-06

The Sanwa Supply DP-06 is a 15.6-inch portable monitor. The maker publishes its body dimensions and weight, but the materials checked for this guide do not state the desk footprint with the stand open. Even if you need a 15.6-inch screen and the body's specifications suit your use, you still need to confirm the space required for placement.

If the model and connection requirements suit your setup, and the seller or maker confirms the stand's open dimensions and cable clearance, you can check the Sanwa Supply DP-06 product page for product information. The link does not confirm that it fits your desk or computer. Do not proceed if you cannot confirm the stand dimensions and connection requirements, or if they exceed the space available. Check the product page for current price, stock, shipping, and return conditions before ordering.

Pause before buying if any of these are unknown

  • You do not know the stand's open width and depth, so you cannot compare them with your desk.
  • You do not know how much room the connected cables need.
  • You cannot confirm the computer's video output or the monitor's power requirements.
  • The screen would leave too little room to use your keyboard or mouse.

The monitor's body dimensions alone cannot establish its desk footprint or compatibility with your specific computer. Ask the maker or seller about unknown requirements using the exact model number, and wait to buy until you have an answer.
