Choose a laptop privacy filter by checking more than the screen’s diagonal size. Compare the screen’s aspect ratio and active display dimensions with the filter’s measurements. Even with a small desk, checking your laptop model first can help you avoid buying a filter that does not fit.

Check your laptop’s display specifications

Find the model number on the bottom of the laptop or in its system settings, then open the manufacturer’s specification page. Look for the display size and aspect ratio. For example, a 13.3-inch 16:9 display has a different shape from a 13.3-inch 16:10 display.

If the specifications do not give the display width and height, measure only the active display area with a ruler. Do not include the black border or bezel. A diagonal measurement alone does not tell you the aspect ratio, so record the width and height separately. If the screen is curved, has a stepped edge, or has a very narrow bezel, do not assume the mounting method will work from the product page alone. Ask the laptop or filter maker if needed.

Compare the filter’s dimensions and mounting method

For example, ELECOM lists the EFWPFX133W9 for 13.3-inch widescreen 16:9 displays and gives its product dimensions as 294.5 × 166.2 mm. The official page does not say whether these are the outer dimensions or the usable coverage area. Do not assume from these numbers alone that the filter covers your active display or fits a specific laptop. Check the model, aspect ratio, and mounting method against the maker’s compatibility information. Ask the maker before buying if that information is unclear.

Products can use different mounting methods, such as stickers attached to the bezel or slide stickers placed near the top of the screen. Check the bezel width, camera and sensor positions, and whether the filter will touch the laptop when you close it. A product that is not designed for touchscreens may make touch input harder to use. Read the product instructions and ask the seller or manufacturer about anything unclear before ordering.

As one product whose specifications you can compare, ELECOM EFWPFX133W9 for 13.3-inch widescreen 16:9 displays is listed here. The link does not mean we have confirmed that it fits your laptop. Check the model, compatibility information, and mounting method before buying. Prices, stock, and shipping can change.

When to wait before buying for a small desk

Do not rush to buy if any of these apply:

  • You do not know the laptop model or display aspect ratio, so you cannot compare it with the filter.
  • The active display width or height does not match the filter dimensions.
  • The bezel is very narrow and you cannot confirm that the chosen mounting method will work.
  • The filter could cover a camera or sensor.
  • You need touch input but cannot confirm that the filter supports it.
  • You have no place to store the filter or cannot tell whether the laptop will close with it attached.

The filter dimensions alone cannot confirm contact with the screen, viewing quality, or fit for a specific laptop. We have not tested the filter on a physical laptop. If the specifications do not match, do not cut or bend the filter. Ask the laptop or filter maker instead.
