A countertop dishwasher may fit in a small kitchen. But measuring only its width and depth can miss problems: the door may hit the faucet, the faucet may not accept a suitable branch fitting, or a hose may not reach. Check the space, door movement, and water connections in order.
This article uses Panasonic's NP-TCR5 as one example. It is a model for explaining what to check, not proof that the appliance will fit every kitchen. We checked the dimensions and installation information against the manufacturer's pages on October 19, 2026.
The machine may fit while its open door does not
The NP-TCR5 body is 47 cm wide, 30 cm deep, and 46 cm high. Its maximum depth with the door open is 59.8 cm, and its maximum height is 46.7 cm. Measure not only the free counter space but also the area in front of the door and the position of the faucet and wall. Official NP-TCR5 specifications
| What to measure | What to check |
|---|---|
| Width and depth of the surface | Can the machine sit level, and can the water hoses run without an unsuitable bend? |
| Space above the machine | Can you open the door and load or remove dishes? |
| Area in front of the door | When it opens to a maximum depth of 59.8 cm, will it hit the faucet or wall? |
| Distance from heat sources | Can you keep it at least 15 cm from a stove or other heat source? |
| Gap beside a wall | The manufacturer's installation example calls for at least 0.5 cm between the machine and a wall. |
For placement between the sink and stove, the manufacturer's guide gives a minimum height of 52 cm and an approximate footprint of 47 cm by 30 cm. For placement between a sink and wall, it recommends at least 52 cm of width and about 60.3 cm from the back so the open door is less likely to hit a faucet. These are guides, not guarantees. Kitchen shape, hose routes, and the faucet position still matter. NP-TCR5 installation conditions
Write the measurements on a simple top-down sketch. You can use an empty cardboard box to check the door's path. There is no need to lift the appliance or test placement near a hot stove. If the surface strength or level is uncertain, send the sketch and measurements to the manufacturer or seller for advice.
Check the faucet model and rental rules
The NP-TCR5 uses a branch faucet fitting for its water supply. The correct fitting depends on the faucet model, and some faucets do not accept one. Look up the faucet's model number and check it with the manufacturer's branch-faucet guide. Some installations require a special tool, so ask a seller or installer about the work. If you rent, first check whether your lease allows a branch fitting. Keep the original faucet parts so the faucet can be restored when the fitting is removed. If the lease terms are unclear, ask the property manager or landlord before buying.
The NP-TCR5's water-supply hose is about 1.2 m long, and its drain hose is about 1 m long. Check whether the supply hose can reach the faucet and whether you can secure the drain hose at the sink. If either hose seems too short, check the official instructions for the exact model before choosing an extension or installation method. Official NP-TCR5 specifications and installation instructions
Match the “18 dishes” figure to your own dishes
The NP-TCR5 is rated for 18 standard place settings and 12 small items under the applicable industry standard. This does not mean every plate, pan, or cooking tool will fit in the same way. The manufacturer's page shows a plate about 24 cm in diameter and a cutting board measuring 18.5 cm square as examples. Deep plates, handled pans, and tall glasses may not fit depending on their shape and arrangement. Official NP-TCR5 product information
Set out the dishes you usually want to wash after a meal and note their diameter, height, and depth. Compare them with the rack photos and diagrams. Check whether they fit in the positions shown in the manufacturer’s loading diagram. Decide by the dishes you need to wash at once, not by household size alone.
Do not turn a water-use test into your savings estimate
For a standard test, Panasonic reports about 9 L of water for the NP-TCR5 and about 40 L for hand washing. Each figure comes from specified conditions, including the number of dishes, detergent amount, and water temperature. Your results can change with the amount of dishes, pre-rinsing, number of cycles, and utility rates. These figures do not tell you how much your household will save, or prove that the dishwasher will always cost less than hand washing. Panasonic's comparison conditions and notes
First, keep a record of how often you would run it and how many dishes you have each time. Also consider the space it occupies and the cost of dishwasher detergent. If hand washing is not a problem, skipping the purchase is a reasonable choice.
A checklist before buying
- Measure the surface's width, depth, and height, plus the space needed to open the door.
- Compare the distances from the stove, wall, and faucet with the model's installation guide.
- Find the faucet model number and confirm the correct branch fitting and installation method.
- If you rent, check the lease and how the original faucet will be restored.
- Trace the supply and drain hoses, then confirm that the dishes you actually use can fit.
If any condition is uncertain, do not assume the appliance will fit. Send the model number and a measurement sketch to the manufacturer, seller, installer, or property manager.
