Solo Microwave or Microwave Oven: Which Fits Your Cooking?

Choose between a solo microwave and a microwave oven by the dishes you make, installation space, container rules, time estimates, and cleanup.

Sources checked: See the sources and dates in the article.

For this comparison, the NE-FL1E is the first candidate if you mainly reheat or defrost food and your existing toaster handles baking. The NE-MS4E is a candidate if you regularly make baked dishes that your current tools cannot handle. The NE-FL1E uses microwave heating only; the NE-MS4E also has oven and grill modes. This is not a market ranking or a guarantee of availability. Model-specific official specifications, manuals, and product information were rechecked on October 11, 2026. Taste, cleaning effort, and time savings were not measured.

Choose the needed function from your dishes

List what you cook and how often. For each dish, note whether you need reheating, defrosting, toasting, or baking, and what problem you want to solve. There is no universal frequency threshold. The NE-FL1E handles microwave reheating and defrosting but has no oven function. The NE-MS4E adds oven and grill cooking. If you have no dish that needs those modes, there may be no reason to pay for them. Check the NE-FL1E specifications and NE-MS4E specifications.

For example, the NE-MS4E's automatic toast menu accommodates one to four slices. The recipe section's toast procedure uses the upper rack and turns the bread partway through. Bread type and thickness affect the result, so this does not show that it takes less effort than your toaster. Follow the NE-MS4E manual and recipe, Toast entry 28.

Compare full dimensions and installation conditions

Dimensions below are width × depth × height, in millimeters.

Item NE-FL1E, solo microwave NE-MS4E, microwave oven
Body dimensions 488 × 380 × 298 470 × 390 × 350
Maximum depth including handle 405 436
Door and depth when open Side-hinged / 741 Drop-down / 649
Clearance and open sides At least 30 mm on each side, 30 mm behind, 100 mm above; one side must be open; do not enclose all five sides At least 20 mm on each side and 100 mm above; front open; the manual's table lists 0 mm behind and below
Cavity dimensions 332 × 365 × 206 370 × 335 × 209
Capacity / body weight 22 L / 8.9 kg 26 L / 14.7 kg

In this example, the solo microwave is 18 mm wider, while the microwave oven is 52 mm taller. The NE-FL1E also requires one side to remain open. Do not decide that a shelf fits by adding the body's width to the clearances alone. Draw the shelf, the appliance's maximum depth, and the door's open path. Include the space to remove a hot dish with an oven mitt, the place where you can set it down, the shelf load limit, power, grounding, ventilation, and surrounding heat-sensitive surfaces. If the NE-FL1E does not fit but you do not need baking, look for another solo microwave instead of changing models based on dimensions alone.

Check containers by mode, not capacity alone

The 26 L capacity does not automatically make the NE-MS4E a better fit for two people, nor does 22 L designate the NE-FL1E for one person. The NE-MS4E cavity is wider but 30 mm shallower than the NE-FL1E in this comparison. Measure containers at their widest point, including rims, handles, and lids, and consider the amount of food.

Container or accessory Microwave mode NE-MS4E oven or grill
Ceramic, porcelain, heat-resistant glass Check exclusions such as metallic decoration; the NE-FL1E manual also excludes cracked dishes Use suitable cookware; high-temperature recipes require glass that withstands thermal shock
Plastic and wrap Check for a microwave-safe mark and heat resistance of at least 140°C; heat-sensitive lids, fatty or sugary foods, and sealed containers are excluded under specified conditions Do not reuse microwave-only plastic or wrap; use only items allowed for oven/grill modes
Silicone Check mode marking, temperature limit, and food conditions The NE-MS4E allows silicone for oven (including proofing) below its temperature limit, not for grill
Metal or foil Not allowed; the NE-MS4E accessory tray must not be used in microwave mode Some metal cookware is allowed, but resin handles are not; follow the recipe for tray position and liners
Paper, wood, non-heat-resistant glass, lacquerware Not allowed Not allowed, except specified baking paper or heat-resistant sheets under the manual's conditions

See the NE-FL1E manual, p. 9 and NE-MS4E manual, pp. 18–19. These are selected checks, not a substitute for the full instructions. “Heat-resistant” alone does not establish compatibility.

The NE-MS4E's “Reheat,” “1 Rice,” “4 Custom temperature,” “7 Leafy/fruit vegetables,” and “8 Root vegetables” menus instruct users not to use a lid or lidded container because it can interfere with the sensor. Do not replace those directions with a different menu's wrap instruction. Follow the manual, p. 18 for the chosen menu.

Treat published heating times as model-specific guides

Both manuals give an estimate for reheating 150 g of room-temperature or refrigerated cooked rice, with manual 600 W heating and no lid or wrap:

Model Manual estimate
NE-FL1E About 1 min to 1 min 20 sec
NE-MS4E About 1 min to 1 min 30 sec

Sources: NE-FL1E manual, p. 22 and NE-MS4E manual, p. 44.

The ranges overlap. They were not measured with identical starting temperatures, containers, or target temperatures, so the difference does not establish which model is faster. The manuals' product pages also advertise up to about 38% less time for a bento in each model's own comparison: NE-FL1E 2 min 20 sec versus 1 min 26 sec, and NE-MS4E 4 min 30 sec versus 2 min 46 sec. The information does not establish that the compared bento weights and starting temperatures match across models, so it cannot rank them against each other. See the NE-FL1E and NE-MS4E product pages.

Separate soaking, heating, and resting time

The NE-MS4E recipe for two servings of white rice uses 1 go (0.18 L) of rice, 190 mL of water, and a heat-resistant glass bowl about 25 cm wide and 2.5 L in capacity. It is a microwave recipe, not oven-heater cooking. This article does not establish that the solo microwave can reproduce it. See the NE-MS4E recipe manual, recipe 07.

The recipe gives about one hour to soak the rice, about 19 minutes for the automatic “9 Cook rice” heating, and about five minutes to stir, cover, and let it stand. It does not give time for washing, operation, serving, or cleanup. Do not describe 19 minutes as total meal-preparation time. Oven preheating also varies: the manual gives examples such as about 11 minutes at 180°C and 13 minutes at 200°C, but room and cavity temperatures affect this, and some recipes do not require preheating. Use the selected recipe rather than adding a fixed time to every dish.

Include cleaning and purchase conditions

The NE-FL1E needs the cavity and exterior wiped after the appliance cools. For the NE-MS4E, also check cleanup of the accessory tray and clean tray. The manual allows the accessory tray in a dishwasher or dish dryer, but not the clean tray. Check whether the tray fits your sink or dishwasher and where it can dry; these conditions do not establish cleaning effort or time. See the NE-FL1E manual, p. 26, NE-MS4E manual, p. 46, and the NE-MS4E product page.

At the October 10, 2026 check, official purchase pages for NE-FL1E and NE-MS4E displayed model information including price. Stock by color and delivery dates can change; a listing does not confirm that a particular unit is available. Before buying, check the desired color, delivery terms, included accessories, model specifications, and the fit at home.
