Choosing a Rice Cooker for One or Two: Batch Size, Space, and Cleaning

Check uncooked rice type and batch size against course limits, then measure the space and plan cleaning for the SR-KT060.

Sources checked: See the sources and dates in the article.

The rice type and amount you cook at once can rule out a model, even when its advertised maximum capacity looks large enough. Check the uncooked amount against the course limits before comparing household size. This article uses Panasonic's domestic IH rice cooker SR-KT060 as an example. Official sources were checked on October 12, 2026.

Record the uncooked amount for each rice type

Note the rice type, uncooked quantity per batch, how often you cook, and how many times you eat from it. Do not convert the weight of cooked rice directly into cups of uncooked rice. For example, cooking 0.5 cup of white rice and cooking 2.5 cups of brown rice are different cases. If your current pot handles your usual amount and you are comfortable using the stove, continuing with it is also an option.

The SR-KT060's supplied measuring cup is about 180 mL and is used for all rice types. Fill it level and follow the water-level mark for the selected rice type and course. Do not confuse it with a standard 200 mL cooking cup or assume that uncooked rice needs a separate cup because it is no-wash rice. See the official manual, pages 5–8.

Check the course-specific limits

The product's 0.5–3.5 cup range does not apply to every course. The manual lists these uncooked-rice ranges:

Rice or dish Course and range Water mark and conditions
White or no-wash rice Eco, regular, or quick: 0.5–3.5 cups Use the course-specific mark and select the rice type
White/no-wash mixed rice Mixed: 0.5–3 cups Use the white-rice mark; check recipe conditions for ingredients and seasoning
Rice with glutinous rice Mixed: 1–2 cups Use the glutinous-rice mark; check separate instructions if white rice is mixed in
White/no-wash rice porridge Porridge: 0.5–1 cup Use the porridge mark; with added ingredients, the limit is 0.5 cup
Brown rice Brown: 0.5–2 cups With added ingredients, 0.5–1.5 cups; do not mix with white or no-wash rice
White rice with grains Multigrain: 0.5–3 cups White-rice mark; up to 30 g of grains per cup of white rice, or follow the package water directions

These limits come from the SR-KT060 manual, pages 8 and 22; the official specifications list the model details. White rice at 0.5 cup is within its listed range, but glutinous rice at 0.5 cup is below its course minimum. Brown rice at 2.5 cups exceeds this model's 2-cup brown-rice limit, despite the 3.5-cup maximum shown for other courses. A quantity within range does not establish that a preferred texture or a custom recipe is suitable.

The manual gives sprouted brown rice, partially milled rice, and germinated rice directions under the multigrain course; check the rice package and manual rather than treating them all as brown rice. Quick cooking is not for recipes with added ingredients, porridge, or rice types other than white and no-wash rice. The manual does not recommend keeping mixed rice, porridge, brown rice, or multigrain rice on keep-warm. This article does not set independent storage durations or methods.

Measure the space needed to open and use it

The body is 25.1 × 30.8 × 20.2 cm (width × depth × height); height with the lid open is 43.0 cm. This does not include guaranteed clearance for lifting out the inner pot. The manual specifies a stable surface and a shelf load rating of at least 11 kg; the cooker itself weighs 4.2 kg, so do not use the appliance weight alone to judge the shelf. Allow room for the lid, steam, ventilation openings, cord (about 1.0 m), and a place to set the hot inner pot and inner lid. The manual does not give a universal wall or ceiling clearance that can be inferred from the open-lid height. See the manual, pages 2–4 and 22. Never test the steam path while cooking or move a hot cooker to check its fit.

Plan for cleaning each part

Unplug the cooker and let it cool before cleaning. Wash the inner pot, inner lid, and rice paddle after use with mild dish detergent and a soft sponge; wipe them dry. Do not use a dishwasher or dish dryer. Wash the inner-lid gasket carefully but do not remove it. The umami catcher is rinsed under running water; do not assume it is a detachable component. Wipe the body and lid interior with a tightly wrung cloth; do not immerse the body. Check the bottom air openings about once a month and remove dust with a vacuum cleaner if needed. The manual, pages 4 and 12–13 includes diagrams and the full care instructions.

Trace a route from the sink to the drying and storage place. Follow the manual's instructions not to use the inner pot as a wash basin or dry it upside down on dishes. The inner lid has a specific fitting procedure; check the illustrated manual, including its checks for blocked holes, deformation, and rice grains. Cleaning time and ease have not been measured.

Keep your pot or choose a cooker that fits

The SR-KT060 can fit a 0.5-cup white-rice batch, but not a 2.5-cup brown-rice batch. Consider it only if your rice type and batch size fit the course table and you can accommodate the lid, steam, and cleaning route. If 2.5 cups of brown rice is a normal batch, keep using your pot or look for a model whose brown-rice course supports that amount.
