Choosing a Kitchen Scale for a Small Kitchen: Weigh the Bowl and Ingredients

Check the combined weight of your bowl and ingredients, display increments, and counter space before deciding whether to replace a kitchen scale.

When choosing a kitchen scale, check more than its maximum capacity. Consider the combined weight of your container and ingredients, the display increment, and where you will use and store it. If your usual amounts stay well within the limit and you can read the display with your bowl in place, the scale you already own may be enough.

This article uses the official specifications for the Tanita KD-410 and Dretec KS-516 as examples. It does not rank the products or compare their accuracy. The official product pages and KD-410 manual were checked on October 20, 2026.

Write down what you weigh and how much

Think of a meal or recipe you made recently. Write down the ingredients you weigh at one time and the bowl or measuring container you use. Small amounts of seasoning and a heavy container with ingredients can require different conditions. If you want to replace a scale because the numbers fluctuate or the display is hidden by a bowl, check the cause separately from the features you need.

If you use tare with a container, check that the container and ingredients together stay within the scale's maximum capacity. The Tanita KD-410 manual says an indicator appears when the combined weight exceeds the maximum. The stated maximum is not the limit for ingredients alone.

A display increment does not prove accuracy

The Tanita KD-410 displays in 1 g increments up to a maximum of 2 kg. The Dretec KS-516 has a weighing range of 2–5,000 g and a 1 g display increment. Two scales with the same increment can still differ in capacity, features, platform, and operating instructions.

β€œ1 g increments” means that the displayed number changes in 1 g steps. It does not guarantee that every measurement is accurate within 1 g. The KD-410 manual warns that slowly adding a small amount of powder may not change the display. Check the weighing range, loading instructions, and any calibration requirements in the manual for the model you are considering.

Feature Tanita KD-410 Dretec KS-516 What to check at home
Maximum capacity 2 kg 5 kg Your usual maximum, including the container
Display increment 1 g 1 g The detail you need; this is not an accuracy guarantee
Water or milk in mL No mL mode shown on the official page Calculated display for water and milk Whether mL is useful or grams are enough
Cleaning and water Do not wash with water; clean with a soft cloth as directed Described as splash-resistant IPX4 Check the manual for each part and cleaning method

This table includes only differences confirmed in the two manufacturers' materials. The mL mode is a calculated value for water and milk; it does not directly measure the volume of other liquids or powders. An IPX4 rating does not mean the whole scale can be immersed or washed under a tap.

Check that your bowl fits and leaves the display visible

Measure the bottom of your bowl and check whether it can sit steadily on the weighing platform without covering the display. A large bowl may block the screen even when its total weight is within the limit. If the official product information does not show the platform dimensions, do not assume it fits by appearance; ask the manufacturer using the model number.

Check whether you have a level, stable place to use the scale and can reach it from storage. Tanita's KD-410 manual says to use it on a flat, nonslip surface without wobble. Its instructions also say to avoid using that model near devices that emit electromagnetic waves, including IH cookers and microwave ovens. These are model-specific instructions; check the manual for another scale.

Keep using your current scale if it meets your needs

If your current scale can weigh your usual ingredients and containers, the display is readable, and its storage and cleaning conditions work for you, there may be no need to buy another one. If an amount exceeds the limit, check whether the recipe allows weighing it in separate batches. If the scale is inaccurate, unstable, has been dropped, or may be damaged, do not assume a higher-capacity product will solve the problem; check the manual or contact the manufacturer.
